Lio & Associates was retained by Infrastructure Health and Safety (IHSA) to produce three proposed Code changes to the Ontario Building Code. The proposed Code changes enhance the health and safety of both the general public and the workers in the province of Ontario. Moreover, they allow the building Code requirements to be consistent with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The three proposed Code changes were to:
- Require permanent anchors on flat roofs higher than 3 m
- Require anchors on buildings for portable ladders
- Require fall protection for roof skylights
The outcomes of the project were that the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing recently forwarded the proposed Code changes to public consultation. Beyond this phase, if the proposed changes get adopted in the Building Code language, over $17 million of savings will result for the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) due to prevented workplace injuries.
